Why Women Over 50 Became My Blueprint
The Quiet Power of 50+ Female Inspiration
The Hailey Biebers and Kendall Jenners of the world are beautiful and accomplished in their own right. But when I'm looking for a blueprint for my life, I'll always turn to the women who've proven that beauty, wisdom, and relevance don't expire at 40—they transform and deepen, like fine wine.
My inspiration lately has been women in the 50+ category. As a 30-something-year-old woman, I never understood looking to women who came after you to get your inspiration. Nothing against the Haleys, Kendalls and Loris, but I need to be inspired by women who have created or led the way. I'm trying to go forward, not sideways, and asking someone on the same journey as me how to get where I'm going seems unnecessarily challenging. That's like asking a sailor how to fly a plane or asking someone new in town about the most popular club. Whether it's on social media or IRL, here are some things that 50+ women have taught me from near and far:
Beauty Wisdom That Transcends Time
The women who've been around the block know that beauty isn't about chasing trends. It's about timeless rituals that work toward longevity. They've taught me to use rollers to set my hair for less heat damage and longer-lasting styles. Their makeup collections aren't overfilled with every product on the market. They're curated essentials because they've learned the real secret: invest in skincare over makeup. When your canvas is well-maintained, you need fewer products to maintain it.
The Self-Love Revolution Started Before Instagram
While Gen-Z posts about self-love with perfectly filtered photos, 50+ women have been quietly mastering the art of loving themselves authentically for decades. They've shown me the importance of developing a strong self-concept that isn't dependent on likes or followers. Their confidence comes from within, from knowing who they are and standing firmly in that knowledge.
Boundaries Were Cool Before They Were Trending
These ladies taught me that "no" is a complete sentence with little to no explanation necessary. While I used to twist myself into knots explaining why I couldn't do something, these women showed me that protecting your peace requires clear boundaries. They don't apologize for prioritizing themselves when necessary.
Identity Beyond Relationships and Career
In an era where we're often defined by our relationship status or job title, 50+ women have mastered creating identities that transcend both. They've taught me that neither a man nor work should be your entire existence. Their lives are rich experiences woven with passions, friendships, community involvement, and personal pursuits.
Faith as Foundation
Many of these women have shown me the importance of having a strong relationship with God because there are times when it will just be you and Him. In moments of trials and tribulation alike, they've demonstrated how faith provides a foundation that no earthly relationship can match.
Dress Like Your Life Depends On It (Because It Kind Of Does)
Perhaps my favorite lesson: put the outfit on and dress like you're running into your worst enemy or the man of your dreams. These women understand that presentation isn't shallow—it's powerful. How you present yourself to the world speaks volumes before you utter a word.
